Hollow Metal Drywall Frame

The Hollow Metal Drywall Frame is ideal for drywall environments. In this type of application, the frame encases the entire wall so the studs should already be covered by drywall or sheetrock before installing the frame. The wall’s dimensions are referred to as the “jamb size,” and the part of the frame that wraps around the wall is known as the “throat” of the hollow metal frame. The rough opening needed is the nominal door width + 2” and nominal door height + 1”. For example, a 3’0” (36″) x 6’8” (80″) door would need a rough opening of 3’2” (38″) x 6’9″ (81″).

MDF Door Grooves

There are different Groove designs that are available for MDF doors. It is important to know which grooves are available for which door styles. All groove styles are available for the Encore line but only the Standard V-Groove is available for the Ovation and Bravo lines.

Standard “V” Grove

The size is ¼” wide at the face and 3/32” deep. This is the only v-groove design they offer.

West Groove

West Grove matches Masonites “West End Series”. It is a very small grove with a slight angled side. Size is 5/32” wide by 1/16” deep.

Square Groove

This grove can be customized but has limitations of ¼” minimum width at the face and 3/16” maximum depth. ABS can provide more information on custom sizes.

Availability

Ovation doors can only have the standard v-groove for 1-3/8″ and 1-3/4″ doors.

Bravo doors can only have the standard v-groove for 1-3/8″ and 1-3/4″ doors. They can accommodate a standard 4-goove routes in the vertical orientation only with either a flat panel or raised panel layout

Encore doors can have the standard v-groove and the west groove for 1-3/8″ and 1-3/4″ doors, but can only have the square groove for the 1-3/4″ doors.

Design Pressure

Design Pressure (DP) is a numerical value rating which defines the structural wind loading requirements for a building, and components or cladding of a building, described in pounds per square foot. Essentially Design Pressure represents the wind load the door system can withstand.

Factors that are used in determining the Design Pressure (DP) rating are:

  • Basic wind speed velocity in miles per hour
  • Building height
  • Occupancy type
  • Exposure category based on geographic location
  • Whether the building is enclosed or open
  • Building shape
  • Gust factors

Rated DP Unit Testing

During testing, a door unit is attached to a wooden frame and clamped to a specially designed wall. Air pressure is gradually reduced on the inside of the unit, which increases the pressure on the outside until the door fails (breaks beyond repair). The test pressure must reach 1.5 times the design pressure for 10 seconds without the unit suffering permanent damage. In other words, a unit with a DP of 30 would have to withstand 45 psf. The instant the unit fails, the psf is recorded and is used for the calculation.

Requirements for a DP Rated Unit

The requirements for a DP Rated Unit is dependent on the type of unit being constructed. The unit construction must match the conditions in which the unit was tested. There are 4 different type of units tht can be DP certified:

  • Therma-Tru Continuous Door System
  • Therma-Tru Continuous Door System with Venting Sidelites
  • Simpson Approved Dowel Pin Door Slab with Therma-Tru Continuous Frame System
  • Simpson Approved Mortise and Tenon Door Slab with Therma-Tru Continuous Frame System.

Most doors will require screws in the top and bottom rails of the unit.

Any units with a mullpost will require a screw above and below the strikes on the mullpost. Double Doors require the use of a Coastal Astragal.

Installation of a DP Rated Unit

The installation of a DP Rated Unit will follow Therma-Tru’s standard installation process.

DP Ratings

Common DP ratings that can be certified and labeled on units are DP47 or DP50. The only difference between the two is the threshold that the unit tested was able to achieve. This is limied to 6/8 or 8/0 unit. The configuration of the door and the door style are used to determine which rating the unit can receive, or if it is not able to be rated.

PermaCast Plus Columns

PermaCast Plus™ Columns are a new version of the PermaCast Columns. They provide better performance and have an even better impact on the environment. These new columns have a darker hue which quickly fades away when rubbed with a 120 grit sandpaper which helps to attain optimal paint adherance. PermaCast Plus Columns come ready to prime and paint, offer a consistent appearance, and provide larger load capacities with their lightweight material.

PermaCast Plus Columns feature a class A fire rating along with a lighter weight design for easier setup and installation. The columns are ideal for interior and exterior use. The appearance of our PermaCast Plus fiberglass columns can be customized to match even the most unique aesthetic with a low maintenance year-round use, making them perfect for any residential or commercial property.

Column Types

PermaCast columns are available round, square, or craftsman. Round columns are available with or without a taper and either plain or fluted. Square columns are available plain, with a recessed panel, or fluted.

Caps and Bases

Caps and Bases are decorative components that are used in conjunction with a column. There are many options of construction and shapes for Caps and Bases.

Fluting

Fluting can be added for an additional flare on the column. Stock fluting is part of the manufacture process. Custom fluting is available for round PermaCast columns and is milled after the column is manufactured.

Splitting

Depending on the style of the column, some can be split to wrap an existing structure or be used as decorative trim work for the exterior of the house.

Patio Doors

Patio doors connect your outdoor living spaces to the rest of your home. Not only do you invite more natural light and air into your home, but you also add architectural interest to your outdoor spaces. For large patios and poolsides, combine three doors for an even grander entrance.

A double door that leads out to a patio or back yard isn’t necessarily a patio door. If both doors function, this is called a double door. An astragal is used between the doors and while one remains closed most of the time, it is possible to open it for a wider entryway. If only one door functions, this is called a true patio door. There are two types of true patio doors: the first is when one of the doors is stationary and the other is hinged either to the jamb or the center mullpost, and the second is when one of the doors glides in front of a stationary door.

Center-Hinged or Jamb Hinged

Patio doors where one of the doors is stationary can have the active door hinged to either the exterior jamb or to the center mullpost. A screen can slide in front of the active door for air flow, but can then slide in front of the stationary door for outside access. A track is built into the head jamb and sill for easy screen movement. Any center or jamb hinged units with a screen must be inswing, however if no screen is necessary then the unit can be outswing.

Jamb-Hinged

Center-Hinged

Sliding or Gliding

Gliding or sliding doors have one door that is stationary. The active door will glide along a track in the sill and the head jamb. Due to the stationary door, there can also be a screen applied for air flow and the screen will slide in front of the staionary door for easy access outdoors.

Double vs Patio Doors

There is a difference between a patio door and a double door. As mentioned above a patio door has one active door while the other is fixed or stationary. A double door is when both doors are hinged to the exterior frames. One of the doors will be the active door that is more commonly used, while the other is a passive door. The passive door will have an astragal attached and some sort of locking mechanism into the sill and head jamb. The lock can be unlocked as well to open both doors for extra air flow.

Patio door unit can be crafts with two or three door panels in a variety of species and sizes.

Smooth Grain

Reeb Finish Smooth Grain is the process of applying the Standard PrismaGuard Finish to an OnGuard Primed Jamb. The finish was designed to make a more realistic looking wood finish on a composite component to coincide with the high end fiberglass doors. It features a more matte appearance that compliments the sheen of the door and allows for the finish to shine through as the focal point rather than the composite graining options on the OnGuard Straight Grain or Wood Grain Jambs. This finish will be limited to OnGuard Primed frame components only. Smooth Grain is available in all Reeb Finish PrismaGuard Stain options.
