Exit devices are used with doors that are in an exit path and may be commonly be referred to as Panic Hardware. Typically used in commercial applications like schools, hospitals, and government buildings, exit devices are necessary when a large number of people may need to exit the building fast. Most door units utilizing exit devices are outswing units.
Exit devices can be applied to single doors or double doors. If using a double door, astragals should not be used in true panic situations as it prohibits a timely exit due to the need to unlock the flushbolts. While it is not necessary, it is a good idea to have the doors as well as the frames reinforced. Exit Devices are available with a fire-rating and are required for used in a fire-rated unit.
Panic hardware can be a push bar or a crossbar. When a pushbar is pushed into the hardware base, the door unlatches from the frame. When the crossbar, sometimes referred to as a crashbar, is pushed down, it delatches from the frame.There are three models of exit devices available in both RIM and SVR.
