Multi-Point Locksets

The best option for security is a multi-point lock. By definition, multi-point locks secure the door to the frame or astragal at multiple points. This locking system provides a better seal, and enhanced security for your home. However, multi-point locks require additional preparation in the face and edge of the door, as well as the frame. The lock mechanism sits in a pocket in the edge of the door and the edge needs a channel routed to connect the mechanism to the other points of contact.

Multi-point locks are especially beneficial in two scenarios. First, with 8’ tall doors, to prevent warping and maintaining a good seal the entire length of the door. In fact, you’re doing your customer a disservice if you don’t highly recommend multi-point locks with all 8’ tall doors. And second, in extreme wind situations, when the pressure is so great that it could separate the door and weather strip, creating a leak.

Double Doors

There are some special considerations regarding double door applications. First, installation is more critical than for single units. The unit has to be square for the door panels to meet evenly. It’s imperative that the head jamb be secured as well. The head and sill capture preps for flush or astragal shoot bolts are done in the field. The head jamb capture plate needs to be mortised into the head on site, and make sure the sill capture cup supplied is caulked in place to avoid possible water infiltration.

For double doors, the decision must be made whether the inactive door will receive any prep. Most inactive handlesets simply screw to the face of the inactive door, leaving an aesthetically pleasing look on the inactive door that matches the active door.

Trilennium Multi-Point Lock

The standard multi-point lock for wood doors is the Trilennium lock from Endura. Where most multi-point locks include one latch and multiple bolts, the Trilennium multi-point lock features 3 latches that double as bolts when they’re engaged. Latches differ from bolts in that they drop into the keeper without any action needed from the operator. The latches of the Trilennium lock retract to open the door when the lever is pushed down, and extend deeper into the frame when the lever is pulled up.

The Trilennium lock also features a beefy, one piece, I-beam that not only increases the strength and precision of the lock, but actually strengthens the edge of the door as an additional measure to help prevent warping over the life of the door.

Single Multi-Point Lock System includes Multi-Point Lock assembly package (installed) and active handle set (field applied). Double Multi-Point Lock System includes Multi-Point Lock assembly Package with head and foot flush bolts (installed) and active & dummy handle set (field applied). In double door applications, shoot bolts are extended into the sill and head jamb. The Endura Ultimate Astragal is stocked to match the Trilennium multi-point lock. It has a matching veneer to go with wood double doors. This astragal, combined with the lock, gives the best seal and function of the unit.

Based on the handlset used, a different backset may be necessary. It is important to identify which handlset will be used at the time of order so the appropriated sized backset can be bored into the door.

NAMI Certification

The Structural Design Pressure Certification Program involves applying a label from the National Accreditation & Management Institute (NAMI) to the certified door unit. NAMI maintains the certifications for each company. Each applicable location has their own labels so it can be tracked which location produced the unit. In order to apply the label, the assembly shop must be trained on and duplicate the assembly method used by the testing facility. Even if a unit construction seems to be “better” than the construction that was tested, it cannot be certified until additional testing occurs.

NAMI Label

NAMI certified Structural Performance Label provides Design Pressure information for the building code inspector. NAMI is in possession of the test reports to support these performance claims. The manufacturer is affirming or promising that the door unit will perform to the designated design pressure. If it is not a fire rated door, the label will be placed approximate 12” down from top of door on hinge stile. If it is a fire rated door the NAMI label will be placed under the fire door label.

DP Rated Simpson Door Slabs

Design Pressure (DP) is a numerical value rating which defines the structural wind loading requirements for a building, and components or cladding of a building, described in pounds per square foot. Essentially Design Pressure represents the wind load the door system can withstand.

Below is a listing of doors with dowel pins and doors with a mortise and tenon that have been approved by Simpson to create a DP Rated unit.

Therma-Tru Handleset Functionality

The Therma-Tru handlesets have two different functionalities: Grip-Style & Lever-Style.

Grip-Style

The grip-style handlesets offer an intuitive approach to the multi-point locking system with on-trend aesthetics. A simple 90-degree twist of the thumb turn (interior) or a key (exterior) is all it takes to engage the door frame at three points with no need to lift the handle set lever. An integrated mishandling device protects the door and frame from accidental damage. Features deadbolt located above handle set.

The grip style is ONLY available for single swing door configurations: single units, sidelite units, patio units with one operating door. This cannot be used with double door units at this time.

Lever-Style

The lever-style handlesets bring form and function together with decorative styles. A convenient upward turn of the handle is required before all three points will engage. An integrated mishandling device helps protect the door and frame from accidental damage. Features deadbolt below the handle set.

The lever-style is avialable for single swing and double swing door configurations.

Mortise Locks

Mortise locks dominated the markets years ago before cylindrical locks arrived on the scene, and they are still popular in many custom and premium doors today. The body of a mortise lock isn’t round like a cylindrical lock but rectangular. They are commonly referred to as a box and sit in a pocket in the door.

Mortise locks can be used for exterior or interior doors with an appropriate stile width. They are available with either a lever handle or a knob to open and close the door. The most important advantage is added security.

The box itself is heavy-duty and the bolt is rectangular, offering more stopping power. Some mortise locks feature bolts that are reinforced with hardened steel inserts for maximum protection and security. The box itself is complex with a series of notches and levers, and it’s totally concealed when the door is closed.

Mortise locks also include a feature which prevents the ability to retract the latch with a credit card. Lastly, they’re more aesthetically pleasing because of their clean look and old antique charm.

Standard and Commodity Steel Lites and Frames

The lites used in steel doors are inserted via a lite frame. The frame is held together by screws on the interior side of the door. Lite plugs are inserted into the holes to hide the screws. At times, the screw plugs may get lost or need to be replaced. The number of lite plugs depends on the size of the lite frame. A 2566 frame means the glass is 25″ wide by 66″ tall.
