How to Measure for a New Door Unit

A new door unit provides a great way to freshen up the look of your home. Proper measuring is important to ensure that the new unit will fit in the rough opening.

The most accurate way to measure is with the interior casing removed from the existing unit. This will allow you to see what the true spacing is between the jamb and the rough opening.

To remove the interior casing, first score the paint line with a knife.

Then insert a pry bar and gently pop the casing off.

Standing on the inside of your home, measure from the left stud to the right stud to find the width of the rough opening.

Next, measure from the subfloor to the header to find the height of the rough opening.

Finally, measure from the interior drywall to the exterior facing material to obtain the jamb depth.

By measuring the Rough Opening you will have the best understanding of the unit size you will need to replace your current unit.
