Height Measurements

Height Factor

When determining the height of an exterior door unit, there are a number of things to consider.

  • Height of the Door: A standard door is 6’8″ (80″) but not all door units are this height. The height of the door may or may not include the sweep in their measurement.
  • Type of Sill: Each sill has a slightly different height which factors in the calculation of the Unit Dimension Height.
  • Inclusion of a Transom in the Configuration: A unit with a transom will have an adder for the unit dimension of the transom. Most transoms have a 13-1/2” Unit Dimension.
  • Swing of the Unit: The swing of the unit has a huge impact on the Unit Dimension height because of the way the door sits on the sill. For an inswing unit, the door sits on the sill cap while for an outswing unit it sits on the metal saddle.

Measurement Types

There are four different types of Height measurements.

  • Unit Dimension Height: Measurement of a unit from the top of the head jamb to the bottom of the sill
  • Rough Opening Height: Measurement from the head stud to the subfloor
  • Brickmould Dimension Height: Measurement of a unit from the top of the head brickmould to the bottom of the sill
  • Masonry Opening Height: Measurement from the head masonry piece to the subfloor

Height Measurements

An exterior unit includes a head jamb, the door, and the sill. The measurements below are based on a 3/4″ head jamb (in the rabbet) and a 79-1/4″ door height before the sweep is added.

Inswing Sill Extender

A sill extender allows a common sill size to be extended to create a larger sill. This is necessary when the jamb size is not the typical width. Most sills are the same length as the jamb is deep. When there is a deeper jamb, the sill will stop short. Adding a sill extender makes the door unit look more correct.

Inswing sill extenders are an aluminum sill nosing that increases the width of the sill. It slides or snaps onto the front portion of a 5-3/4″ sill allowing for different jamb widths. Sill extenders can also be used to create a sill horn. A sill horn is where the jamb leg comes to the side of the sill and the brickmould or casing comes down on the nosing of the sill.

A 1″ sill extender will be used with a 5-3/4″ sill. This extender is available in 3′, 6′, and 13′ lengths and is available in a mill, bronze, or nickel finish to match the finish of the sill.

2″ Sill Extender

A 2″ sill extender will be used with a 5-3/4″ sill. This extender is available in 3′, 6′, and 13′ lengths and is available in a mill, bronze, or nickel finish to match the finish of the sill.
